Learning to Select from Multiple Options

Many NLP tasks can be regarded as a selection problem from set of options, such classification tasks, multi-choice question answering, etc. Textual entailment (TE) has been shown the state-of-the-art (SOTA) approach to dealing with those problems. TE treats input texts premises (P), options hypotheses (H), then handles by modeling (P, H) pairwise. Two limitations: first, pairwise is unaware other which less intuitive since humans often determine best comparing competing candidates; second, inference process time-consuming, especially when option space large. To deal two issues, this work first proposes contextualized model (Context-TE) appending k context current modeling. Context-TE able learn more reliable decision for H it considers various context. Second, we speed up coming Parallel-TE, learns decisions multiple simultaneously. Parallel-TE significantly improves while keeping comparable performance Context-TE. Our methods are evaluated on three (ultra-fine entity typing, intent detection and QA) that typical problems different sizes options. Experiments show our models new SOTA performance; particularly, faster than times in inference.
